Gallery as Community: Art, Education, Politics (Whitechapel Gallery, 2012) grew out of a series of conversations I initiated with leading practitioners from art galleries across the UK — including Spike Island, South London Gallery, The Showroom, Collective (Edinburgh), Serpentine Galleries, Modern Art Oxford and Camden Art Centre. I edited the conversations that form the book.
The publication offers a critical examination of the relationship between cultural institutions and the publics they relate to, asking questions about pedagogy, structural impact and institutional power. Through conversations with curators, artists, and educators, it explores how socially engaged practice and collaborative action impact on institutions.
